Designed to improve on the original Galaxy Buds, the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus offer better call quality, clearer sound, and longer battery life. They also feature a more compact design and better overall performance. The Galaxy Buds Plus have an IPX2 water-resistant rating and include a charging case. While the case is a bit flimsy, it drops charge faster than many competitors. It also comes with an additional eartip, making it easier to keep the headphones in place.
Unlike the original Galaxy Buds, the Galaxy Buds Plus feature a touch-capacitive button that understands both single and double presses. In addition, the earbuds include a dynamic equalizer that amplifies low-end frequencies, while also boosting upper-midrange frequencies. This means that the Galaxy Buds Plus have greater impact and clarity than most wireless earphones. The earbuds also come with an extra pair of silicone eartips. However, the silicone eartips do not provide as much comfort as foam eartips.
In addition, the AKG tuned drivers add a more consumer-friendly sound to the earbuds. They are not as detailed as some other wireless earphones, but they do offer a better overall response. The AKG tuned drivers also create a more immersive soundstage that’s more conducive to dance music. If you’re a fan of pop, rock, and hip-hop, you’ll love the Galaxy Buds’ sound. The soundstage is a bit bigger than with the first-generation Galaxy Buds, but the audio doesn’t reach very deep into the bass.
The Buds Plus’ ambient sound amplification feature lets you hear outside noise when you’re on a call. You can activate it with the app, and you’ll be able to adjust the intensity of the mode with three different settings. The heavier the strength of the Ambient mode, the more likely you’ll be able to pick up loud, bright, and metallic sounds. It also works less well if there’s a lot of background noise, like in a busy room, or if you’re having a conversation with someone nearby.
In our initial review of the Google Pixel Buds A-Series, we noted that the headphones had volume problems. If you experience similar issues, you’ll be able to fix them by downloading a software update from the Google Play Store or through your phone’s developer options.
In addition to the Ambient mode, the Galaxy Buds Plus offer a Gaming mode that decreases the latency between the screen and the sound. You can also turn on Double tap earbud edge, which turns on the earbuds’ touchpads and lets you adjust the volume from the outside ring of the earbuds.
You can also enable a Voice focus option, which allows you to control the audio output of your calls. You can also turn on the extra-high Ambient volume feature, which relays ambient sound at a higher level. It isn’t as effective for a conversation in the same room as it is for music, but it’s still an interesting feature.
In addition to the earbuds, you’ll receive a USB-C to micro-USB charging cable, a carrying case, and two extra silicone eartips. The earbuds have an IP42 waterproof rating and can handle light rain.
